Balanced Man Program
“In ancient Greece, the spirit of competition inspired individuals to live life to the fullest. This spirit clearly differentiated the ancient Greeks from other cultures that came before them.
The Greeks summed it up in one word: arete – excellence in every part of life – moral, intellectual, and physical – that together contributed to the development of the whole person. “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body” symbolized by the Balanced Man.
In ancient Greece, developing mind and body were two complementary partners of a quality education. The ideal education consisted of philosophy, language, art, music, and exercise.” It was with these ideas in mind that Sigma Phi Epsilon developed its revolutionary Balanced Man program in a quest to redefine the fraternity experience and build men as the Greeks did, men of “Sound Minds and Sound Bodies.”
SigEp set out to “transform the pledging process from that of proving worthiness to that of achievement in the chapter and community.” Through the Balanced Man Program Sigma Phi Epsilon has done just that; establishing a zero tolerance policy for hazing, SigEp is the first and only national fraternity to eliminate the pledging process.
The Balanced Man Program encourages a life of balance, first and foremost, and provides a fun, practical way to achieve that balance through a self-paced series of Challenges that center on personal growth and development. Upon completion of these Challenges members of SigEp have achieved tangible goals, become actively involved in their campus and community, developed personal skills, and have met people that have mentored and pushed them to become leaders in the world.
Though University life will educate the man in scholastic matters, today’s collegiate experience lacks the ability to prepare many of today’s students for the real life experience that follows. The Balanced Man Program assists brothers in obtaining this knowledge and real world experience through its Challenge Activities, some of which include:
